Overview

The pilgrimage trail to Gosaikunda, known as the helambu trail, starts in Sundarijal. It lies on the south side of the Kathmandu valley. The trek takes 6 days to complete. To reach the sacred lake situated at around 4,360 meters in the Langtang region. This lake holds deep spiritual faith for both Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims. Many people visit this place annually, especially during the Janai Purnima festival.

Gosaikunda Trek Route

This trek route offers the scenic beauty of hills, lush green forest, and Tamang villages near Kathmandu. Along the way, you can also enjoy spectacular views of the Langtang Himalayas and diverse flora & fauna. The trail passes through the three different districts, Nuwakot, Sindhupalchowk, and Rasuwa. Highlights

  • Holy Gosaikunda Lake situated at an altitude of about 4,300 meters. Thousands of Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims visit it during the Janai Purnima festival.

    You can enjoy panoramic vistas of Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Langtang Lirung, and Himal Chuli.

    You also have a chance to see several high-altitude lakes such as Suryakunda, Ganesh Kunda, and Bhairab Kunda.

    Crossing the Laurebina Pass (4,625 m) offers breathtaking vistas of snow-capped mountains.

    You will trek through traditional Tamang and Sherpa villages and witness rich Himalayan culture.

    The area is home to wildlife like red pandas and musk deer, with diverse flora including rhododendrons and alpine meadows.

Itinerary

Day 01

Trek from Sundarijal to Chisapani

You will begin your journey by taking a public vehicle from Ratnapark or book a cab to reach Sundarijal. It is the starting point of our trek, where you will have a light breakfast. After getting your entrance ticket at the Shivapuri National park check point, you will follow the trail. Through the dense oak and rhododendron forest. You will stay overnight in the village of Chisapani.

  • Altitude: Sundarijal (1,460m) to Chisapani (2,215m)
  • Altitude Gain: 755 meters

Day 02

Trek from Chisapani to Kutumsang

After an early morning breakfast, you will start our trek. Today’s trek trail leads you through rural landscapes with views of langtang and Jugal Himal ranges. The path passes through several Tamang villages, such as Chipling and Golfhubhanjang. In Chipling we will have lunch and move ahead. After Golfubhanhang, the trail path is mostly stairs, surrounded with lush forest. You will overnight stay in Kututmsang

Day 03

Trek from Kutumsang to Tharepati

After waking up to the magnificent view of the langtang range, you will start the day with a hearty breakfast. And get prepared for the next leg of our journey. After an hour’s walk, you will stop at Myanang Ghoat for Lunch. The trail is a bit more challenging than yesterday, as it follows the high ridge of Tharepati. While ascending in the trail the landscape shifts into alpine terrain with stunning views of hills and mountains. You will stay overnight at tharepati in Sindupalchowk district.

  • Altitude: Kutumsang (2,470m) to Tharepati (3,640m)
  • Altitude Gain: 1,170 meters

Day 04

Trek from Tharepati to Gosaikunda

Today is the day where we will reach the sacred Gosaikunda lakes. From Tharepati, you will ascend and descend in the trail, until you approach Phedi. After having lunch in Phedi, you will start your trek, following the vertical slope until you cross the lauribinayak pass. In the evening you will arrive at Gosaikunda,so give yourself time to relax and explore the lake area. You will stay overnight at Gosaikunda.

  • Altitude: Tharepati (3,640m), Lauribinayak (4630m), Gosaikunda (4,380m)
  • Altitude Gain: 740 meters

Day 05

Trek from Gosaikunda to Dhunche

In the morning, after taking a dip in the holy water of gosaikunda, you will feel the journey was worth it to reach this place. After spending some time at the lake and taking photographs, you will descend down to Dhunche. Today’s trail is a continuous downward slope, so using trekking poles is recommended. On the way, you will have lunch at the chandanbari and continue your walk. Celebrate your accomplishment, this is the last day of the trek. You will stay overnight at Dhunche.

Day 06

Drive from Dhunche to Kathmandu

This is the day when our trek journey ends. After having breakfast at the hotel, you will take a scenic drive following the Trishuli River to arrive in Kathmandu. It’s a time to reflect on the moment you enjoy during trekking.

  • Drive Time: 6−7 hours
