Workshop
on Bilateral Nepal- Bangladesh Tourism held
Ministry of Culture, Tourism and
Civil Aviation (MoCTCA) in association with Nepal
Tourism Board (NTB) and Nepal Association of Travel
Agents (NATA) organised an interaction programme
on August 01 to promote bilateral tourism between
Nepal Bangladesh. “There is a need to encourage
private sector airlines, as Biman Bangladesh alone
could not withstand the flow of passengers between
Nepal and Bangladesh,” said Deep Kumar Upadhayay,
Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation
in the programme and adding he said, “this
will help promote bilateral tourism. Tourism industry
is important for socio-economic development and
should be given more priority.’ Shankar
Prasad Pandey, joint secretary at MoCTCA, speaking
on the occasion, said that the regional and bilateral
effort could help uplift deteriorating Nepali
tourism sector. There lies immense potentiality
for the bilateral tourism,” Pandey added.
Basanta Hamal, secretary at NATA requested Bangladeshi
government to encourage Bangladeshi travel and
tour agents in promoting bilateral tourism for
the benefit of both the countries. “NTB
and Bangladesh Tourism Corporation could also
work together to promote joint destination market,”
said Tek Bahadur Dangi, chief executive officer
at NTB. It will be an unparallel combination from
the longest beach to the highest peak of the world
and tourism packages like this could be easily
sold in the international market, Dangi added.
Humayun Kabir, ambassador of Bangladesh to Nepal
said that there is huge potentiality of Bangladeshi
travellers to visit Nepal because Bangladeshis
travel a lot to Thailand and Singapore. Poverty
is the major challenge in South Asia and tourism
industry could be an answer to poverty alleviation,
he added. Bangladesh is working towards establishing
a bus service between Kathmandu and Dhaka, which
could help increase in flow of tourist, he informed.
Similarly, Bangladesh festival is going to be
organised in Kathmandu on October 8-10 which is
expected to help promote tourism between the two
countries, Kabir said.
Ananda Aditya and Rudra P Upadhaya presented paper
entitled From Summits to the Sea-Shore Promoting
Nepal-Bangladesh Partnership in Tourism. They
outlined the need to have close cooperation between
two countries to promote tourism.
Veteran tourism entrepreneur Karna Sakya commenting
on the paper said that Bangladesh has a bulk of
affluent middle class who are upwardly mobile.
"We need to attract these middle class who
have access to money and desire to travel,"
he added.
