Dolpo is isolated from the rest of Nepal by high passes to the south, so it is known as Ba-Yul or the Hidden Land. Much of Dolpo remains culturally and religiously linked with Tibet and the people still today continue to trade with Tibet on the ancient ‘grain for salt’ trade routes, but the southern part of Dolpo is a region of Hindu influence. Although a few anthropologists and geographers had explored the region, the entire district was closed to foreigners until 1989. In 1990 individual trekkers were allowed into this region but the upper Dolpo still remains subject to high special permit and bureaucratic formalities.
Accommodation and supplies are very poor. So, a complete organized camping trek is the only way to explore this region.
