Dolpo is situated on the Trans-Himalayan region on the west of Himalayan range , bordered in the North by Tibet , & part of the region lies in the She Phoksundo National Park ,mid-western part of Nepal in Dolpa District .About 9000 people live in this region ,most of the villages are among the highest altitude settlement on the earth, practicing Bon Buddhism, an ancient religion with roots in Animism and Buddhism. The Bon-po religion, which forms the entire cultural base for Tibetan Buddhism, was founded 18,000 years ago, during the Zhang Zung Empire of today's western Tibet. The landscape is dotted with sacred monasteries, Thangka paintings, and chortens. The local community is heavily dependent on trade with Tibet and agriculture. This area is also famous for its salt trade caravans. It attracts many westerners who make films & documentaries. The famous film CARAVAN, an Oscar nominated film was produced in this region.
