Festivals are the cultural treasures of Nepal. Festivals for Nepalese are the living part of their rich cultural heritage. Festivals in Nepal are taken as the common ground to assemble the Nepalese of diverse cultural backgrounds. As Nepal is more occupied with Hindu and Buddha religion, most of the festivals are related to different Hindu and Buddhist Gods and Goddesses and they are celebrated on such days consecrated for them by their religion and tradition. Dashain, Tihar, Janai Purnima, Buddha Jayanti, Shree Krishna Janmasthami, Teej, Indra Jatra, Buddha Jayanti, Fagu Purnima( Holi), Ghode Jatra, Shree Ram Nawami etc. are the major religion of Hindus and Buddhists.
Among all, Dashai and Tihar are celebrated with the highest national significance. Teej likewise is the greatest festival of Nepalese women.
Beside Hindu and Buddha other festivals are observed in tribute and commemoration of the personal deceased relatives such as the festival of Gaijatra. Mothers are honored by their children with different sweets and clothing in Mata tirtha festival (Mothers’ Day). Likewise some other festivals are held to herald the different seasons or to mark the beginning or end of agricultural cycle. Some are confined to the Katmandu Valley, while still others are celebrated only within one or more villages or cities.
