Do's and Don'ts

Respect local traditions, customs, norms, values, mores, morality, etiquettes and sentiments to help them protect local cultures and maintain local pride. Do not act or conduct or exhibit any behavior, which can be normal to you but contrary to local culture and tradition.

  • Try to change yourself rather than the local values and norms.
  • Do not enter anyone's house or temple without permission. Always, put off your shoes outside, if you are permitted.
  • The host may not want you inside the kitchen or near the cooking corner and praying     room.
  • Do not change dress in open.
  • There is a social taboo for hugging, smooching or any other sexual acts in public places.
  • No photos without permission. People may expect tips for the purpose.
  • Village women do not like shaking hands. Join your hands and say "Namaste" if you want to greet. Namaste almost means "Hello".
  • While visiting temples, stupas or shrines you have to take left to right. Never leave your belongings unattended.
  • Respect privacy when taking photographs
  • Respect holy places
  • Refrain from giving money to children since it will encourage begging.
  • Respect for local etiquette earns you respect
  • Let the Himalayas change you - Do not change them
  • Protect the natural environment
  • Leave the campsite cleaner than you have found it
  • Limit deforestation - make no open fires
  • Burn dry papers and packets in a safe place
  • Keep local water clean and avoid using pollutants
  • Plants should be left to flourish in their natural environment
  • Help your guides and porters to follow conservation measures
