Within half a day’s drive crossing the hilly area of the valley to the lower flat lands of the Terai lies the Chitwan National Park, the former hunting reserve for the ruling Ranas, European royalties and Viceroys of India and now a national park protecting wildlife since 1973. The Chitwan valley, lying between the Churia and Mahabharat range and drained by two major rivers, the Narayani and the Rapti, is home of Royal Bengal Tiger, one-horned Asia Rhinoceros, Gangeic Dolphin, over 450 species of birds and many other wild animals.
